I have been using Stitchfix for a few years. Although I could certainly do without the harsh lighting in the dressing rooms, I don’t really mind shopping. I like taking time to browse and feel fabrics. I like trying things on, knowing that if I get home and something doesn’t fit, I will never remember to come back to return it. I sometimes take shopping as an opportunity to enjoy a soft pretzel and if you ask me, any day with a soft pretzel is a good day.
Shopping can be fun and relaxing, at least when my kids are able to stay at home. I say this with nothing but love and admiration for my kiddos, but shopping with them is about as relaxing as cuddling with a porcupine.
When I am shopping with my children, I don’t get to touch the fabrics. I am too busy reminding them not to put their dirty hands on everything they see. I can try things on, but instead of taking the time to admire myself in the mirror, I am using my body has a barricade to stop my tiny escape arts from ducking under the door. As a demonstration of my love, I have to share my pretzel with them.
A few years ago, I decided to try a personal styling company called StitchFix and it has been amazing. I do occasionally shop in actual stores, but most of my wardrobe has been mailed to my house.
How Does StitchFix Work
I truly think that this idea is nothing short of genius. This company has allowed me to do all of my favorite parts of shopping, take care of my kids, and keep my sanity all at the same time. The only thing that is missing is the pretzel.
When you sign up on their website, you will fill out a questionnaire. You will be asked what kind of clothing you would like to receive, how much you are willing to pay for certain kinds of items, and which colors and prints you love best. They will even show you a bunch of outfits to rate and give feedback. Their goal is to get to know you and what kind of clothing you are most likely to enjoy. You can even link a pinterest page of clothing that you like to help give them some ideas.
Once you decide to order a box, you will indicate how frequently you would like a box delivered. I usually have one once a month or once every other month. You will be charged a $20 styling fee, however this fee is applied as credit toward your box. As long as you buy something from your box, you are all set! Although some of my boxes have been better than others, I have never lost my $20 styling fee. I always find something that I can’t live without.
Once you have placed your order, the StitchFix stylist will select 5 items for you to try on at home.
What will be in my box?
- 5 items, selected specifically for you, neatly folded in a little box
- A price list of the items in your box
- an outfit card to give you ideas of how to wear each item
- A prepaid addressed bag for you to send back your unwanted items.
I have a box. Now what?
This is the fun part! Once your box arrives, open it up and start trying things on. You can do this when the kids are sleeping or walk your hallway like a runway and have your kids “ooh and aah”as they are coloring the carpet with marker and munching on some cat food.
When you have made your final selections, keep what you want and put the rejected items back in the bag. They already have your credit card information on file so they will charge you for the items that you did not send back.
I can usually fit my bag in my traditional sized mailbox at home, but occasionally I have had to put it into one of the larger blue mailboxes. You don’t have to print a label or go to the post office. Thank God.
My December Box
The day before my box arrived, I was telling my husband that I needed a new pair of Toms. These are some of the most comfortable shoes I own and I have several pairs. My husband HATES them, so he was not enthusiastic about me ordering another pair. However, when they were mailed to me, it felt like fate. I decided to keep them!
This skirt is adorable. It is a great color, I love the scalloping on the hem, and it had pockets! However, It just didn’t look great on me so it was sent back.
This was my favorite piece in my December box! I love the length, the stripes, and the fake letter elbow patches. This was clearly a keeper!
This is one of those items that I would love to see on other people, I just don’t think that I could pull it off. It fit well, I liked the colors and the patterns, but when I tried it on, it just didn’t speak to me the way I hoped it would.
I liked this shirt. If there were not other things in the box more, I probably would have kept it. Although I can afford to buy 1-2 new things a month, I do need to be mindful of spending and room I have in my closet.

I have that same skirt and wear it all the time! It’s a staple piece and has held up so well.
